She didn’t just play the spoiled rich girl anymore. I also liked the way that Sugar Maple grew as a character in this story. This is great for a story that is set in the 1950s, because this representation wouldn’t have been in books during that time period. Goldie is mixed race, and she is a lesbian. She figured it out, with the help of her friends. Goldie had to solve the mystery of who was sabotaging Sugar’s race. Luckily, she lives at a Florida resort with her dad, who manages the place, and with a rotating roster of guests and events, there’s bound to be some mystery afoot!
